As mandated by the State of Hawaii, employers must provide healthcare coverage in line with the Hawaii Prepaid Health Care Act we’re excited to offer employees residing in the State of Hawaii enrollment in HMSA coverage.

If you choose to elect coverage, your HMSA plan will be effective starting the first of the month following your hire date, ensuring you’re covered and supported moving forward.

Please note the following details:

  • Coverage begins on the first of the month following your start date.
    • Example, if you are hired January 5th, your coverage would begin February 1st.
  • Your vision benefit under the HMSA enrollment will be with the EyeMed vision plan. You do not need to elect coverage in Workday for vision unless you would like to have double coverage.
  • Your dental benefit is included in the HMSA enrollment. You do not need to elect Dental coverage in Workday unless you would like to have double coverage.

2026 – 2027 HMSA plan year notable updates:

Medical:

  • Medical Drugs. A new Medical Drugs benefit will replace Injections – Other than Self-Administered. The new benefit includes expanded coverage for non-injectable drugs that are either administered by a provider or self-administered under the supervision of a provider.
  • Orthodontic Services to Treat Orofacial Anomalies. Orthodontic services to treat orofacial anomalies are subject to a benefit maximum. In accord with Hawaii law, the Hawaii insurance commissioner will adjust and publish the benefit maximum amount annually. The maximum benefit amount can be found at hmsa.com/orofacial-anomalies.
  • Physical and Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy. Therapy services related to developmental delay may be covered in accord with HMSA’s medical policies.

Dental:

  • Diagnostic & Preventive (D&P) Maximum Waiver. The Diagnostic & Preventive Plan Maximum Waiver (D&P Waiver) included in this plan allows members to utilize preventive dental care benefits covered by HMSA Dental without these services contributing to the plan’s calendar year maximum, provided that care is received from an in-network dentist. This waiver allows a greater portion of the plan’s maximum to be allocated toward other basic or major dental services.

Pharmacy:

Tier 5 – 25% of eligible charge

Diabetic Supplies. Diabetic supplies will be covered at the same benefit levels as other covered drugs and supplies, copayments may vary. Refer to the plan’s Drug Formulary for a list of covered drugs and supplies and their benefit categories.

Diaphragms and Cervical Caps. Diaphragms and cervical caps will be covered at the same benefit levels as other contraceptives, copayments may vary. Refer to the plan’s Drug Formulary for a list of covered drugs and supplies and their benefit categories.

Immunizations. Immunizations recommended by the Centers for Disease Control’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will be covered at 100% of eligible charges.

Other Supplies. A new benefit for Other Supplies will be added to cover supplies listed in the plan’s Drug Formulary, such as diabetic equipment. The member’s copayments for Other Supplies will be:

Participating Provider (up to a 30-day supply) – 20% of eligible charge

Nonparticipating Provider (up to a 30-day supply) – 30% of eligible charge

Contracted Provider for maintenance prescriptions (up to a 90-day supply) – 20% of eligible charge

Specialty Drugs. The member’s copayments for Specialty Drugs will change to:

Tier 4 – 20% of eligible charge
